Biographical / Historical

L.T. Holman Gotchy (1922-2014) was a photographer based in Southern California. He was born in 1922 in Utah. Gotchy and his family moved to Los Angeles in the 1930s, where he graduated from Belmont High School. He grew up near Old Chinatown and had many Chinese friends, with whom he remained close for the rest of his life. He bought his first camera in 1939 and spent much of his time photographing everyday scenes in Los Angeles. Gotchy described himself as a documentary photographer.

As an Army combat medic during World War II, he maintained his interest in photography by capturing the local scenery in Europe. After his service, he returned to Southern California and worked as a firefighter with the U.S. Forest service and as a sign poster for the Auto Club of Southern California.

Gotchy lived in Hesperia, California with his wife Ann Burkhart, where he stored thousands of photographic negatives and would often send postcards with his photographs to friends. He was affilated with the historical preservation fraternity E. Clampus Vitus, as well as the Railroad Booster Club, the Pacific Railroad Society, and the Orange Empire Trolley Museum (now the Southern California Railway Museum).
