Medicine
Scope and Contents
This series contains Chinese and English language printed matter, mostly books, as well as brochures, magazines, newspapers, periodicals, pamphlets, programs, schoolbooks, travel ephemera, and yearbooks.
Chinese language books are organized by format as modern or traditionally bound, and thereunder by topic. The majority, particularly of traditionally bound books, was most likely collected by Sam Chang. Widely read in Chinese classics, he was also interested in contemporary Chinese and Western political philosophy and literature. A significant sub-group of books related to medicine reflect his training in herbal medicine and brief career as a Chinese herbalist in the United States. Also of note are a set of training materials for the police department in Guangdong.
English language books are organized by format, and thereunder by topic. The majority was most likely collected by Tennyson Chang and bear his ex libris. Topics include English literature, Chinese and United States history, politics, and law, as well as special interests in photography in opera. Also contained here are general academic texts, including schoolbooks bearing the name of Xi-en Ying, Tennyson’s wife.
