Materials Specific Details

Many materials such as newspapers, documents, or other forms that are in traditional Chinese language are dated using the Republic of China calender which uses the date of the establishment of the Republic of China, 1912, as the first year. To convert date to Gregorian calender, the number 1911 will be added to the date listed.

This collection was processed by community archivist, Riona Tsai. It was previously arranged in 14 bankers boxes and 1 document case as followed:

Box 10: Junk Mail and leaflets

Box 11: English Magazines

Box 12: China-related material (Chinese Magazines, journals, newsletters)

Box 13: Chinese/English newspapers, magazines

Box 14: Central Daily News, New Kwong Tai, Sino American Daily News, China Times, China times Weekly, Yi Chuang, World Journal, and Chinese Daily News

A few of the boxes had some foldering, particularly by newspaper publication or by organization type, but there is no real specific ordering. Unsure if there was original arrangement that was intended to be attached to this collection.

Periodicals were inventoried in a separate spreadsheet, and the inventory of the Chinese and Chinese American Newspapers were written on the folders. Titles of newspapers/articles that were deaccessioned were also noted. The periodicals that were kept were ones that were seemingly not archived or were not readily available at an institution or digitally elsewhere. This inventory was created because most of the materials are all in Chinese language, so it would be more difficult for users who do not read any Chinese to access.

2 copies of 1 issue of Oct 13-19, 1984 World Journal 世界日報 (Monterey Park) moved from CHSSC Institutional Records into this collection.

Excessive duplicates and periodicals that have already been archived either housed physically or digitally at other institutions were deaccessioned. This includes Los Angeles Times Articles, Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Herald and Express, Stanford Alumni Almanac, Stanford Observer, and the Tidings.

Books that were deaccessioned include "The Great Cover-Up: Nixon and The Scandal of Watergate" by Barry Sussman, "None Dare Call it Treason" by John A. Stormer, "Who's in charge here?" by Gerald Gardner, "The Gravediggers" Phyllis Schlafly and Chester Ward, "Africa: The Primacy of Politics" edited by Herbert Spiro, "The Fearful Master: A Second Look at the United Nations" by G. Edward Griffin, "FDR My Exploited Father in Law" by Curtis B Dall.

Two Chinese Chamber of Commerce books from 1971 and 1977 were moved to the LA Chinatown Collection. A two page letter and envelope with notes and an education plan folder moved to the Walter U. Lum Papers. Green Jade Restaurant business card, Harbor Palace Restaurant business card, Golden Shark Restaurant takeout offer, Dragon Inn Seafood Restaurant menu flyer (2 pages), 2 copies of Joe's Four Rivers Chinese Cuisine menu, 2 copies of Shanghai Hunan restaurant takeout menu, Wing Chong Lung Co. coupons page, and Empress of China Restaurant brochure were moved to the Chinese American Restaurants in Los Angeles Menu Collection. Evelle Younger Triads Report and Controversy materials folder and 1 El pueblo/The Plaza brochure was moved to the Paul Louie Collection. The folder of Chinatown Development Project was moved to the Munson Kwok Collection. The Friends of the Chinatown Branch Library materials were moved to the Dolores Wong Collection. Event invitation moved to Institutional Records.

Chinese and Chinese American newspapers still need to be digitized for use as original materials are extremely fragile and valuable.
